       Sydney R. Grant, 83, Professor Emeritus at The Florida State University and a renowned educational leader, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 in Tallahassee, Florida.  He was a long-time devoted member of the CIES and gave presentations at its conferences until very recently. Born in New York City, he received his B.S. in education (cum laude) at the City University of New York in 1950, his Master’s degree in Spanish language and culture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1951, and the Ed.D. at  Teachers College Columbia University in 1961. Beginning in 1952, he served as a classroom teacher and curriculum coordinator in the New York City public schools. In 1961, he became director of instruction in Verona, N.J., and in 1964, he joined the Teachers College Columbia University US/AID project for educational development in Peru. Upon his return from Peru in 1968, he served as assistant superintendent for curriculum in the Bellevue, Washington schools.         

         Grant went to The Florida State University in 1969 to head the newly established Office of International Education in the College of Education. He served as professor and head of the department of educational foundations and international-intercultural development. He was the associate dean for graduate studies and research, and an area director in the college. During the 1980s, he chaired the international student committee and was active in the Peace Studies program. In addition to his teaching and advisement, he worked on a number of overseas projects with FSU's Learning Systems Institute, among them an assignment as senior resident advisor in Namibia, Southern Africa from 1992-94. He worked on many independent consultancies in Latin America and Asia. He retired from FSU in 1994. He was decorated by the government of Peru for his service to education, was awarded the FSU President's Teaching Award in 1979, and an honorary professorship at the Peruvian university Cayetano Heredia in 1978.        

        He was a combat veteran in the U.S. army, serving in Europe 1944-46. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margarita Henderson Grant; a brother, Harold E. Grant (Edith) of Cranston, RI; sister-in-law, Guadalupe Henderson Pequeno of Mexico City; a lifelong friend, Daniel E. Mayper of New York City; and many devoted friends, colleagues and former students. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 624 Miccosukee Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308, or Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308. He will be missed for his helpfulness, his intense interest in others and for his wonderful smile.
