Citizenship and Democratic Education
CIES Special Interest Group (SIG)
The CANDE SIG takes as its focus Citizenship and
Democratic Education, broadly conceived. Members of the
SIG are concerned with producing high-quality and
innovative research into the many forms of citizenship
and democratic education around the world, and the
relationship of this education to society more
generally.
Members of the SIG take seriously the
connection between the individual and the group—the
citizen and the system in which the citizen lives and
acts—and will strive to reach out to scholars,
policy-makers and practitioners to advance mutual
understanding, to support the work of junior scholars,
and to offer what assistance or insights it can to those
who are developing or renovating programs and practices
for promoting democracy and democratic citizenship in
contexts around the world.
The SIG recognizes that, beyond a set of
core democratic practices (such as free, fair, open,
regular and contested elections) there are a
wide-variety of practices, local circumstances and
cultural practices that give democracies, citizenship,
and education for democratic citizenship a distinctive
character. We thus embrace an inclusive posture towards
different disciplinary approaches to the study of
democratic citizenship education.
We also recognize the many intersections
that our specialization has with other CIES members and
SIGS, including for example, diversity and inclusion,
and environmental and peace education, and aspire to
future cooperation with our fellow SIGS.
