A FOND FAREWELL

The College of Education at Florida International hosted the Secretariat from 2004-2010

A Note from the FIU CIES Secretariat

The Secretariat of the Comparative and International Education Society at Florida International University in Miami has had a long and productive tenure. Our team has included several professors and graduate assistants that have served in different capacities - Lynn Ilon, Kingsley Banya, Hilary Landorf and Ben Baez as Secretaries, Hilary Landorf as Treasurer, Ms. Maryam Soltan Zadeh and Melissa Murchison-Blake as part-time graduate assistants, Ms. Joan Oviawe (Africa SIG founder) (2004-2005) and Ms. Fernanda Pineda (Latin America SIG founder) (2005-2010) as our full-time graduate assistants. Throughout these years, our team has worked diligently to improve processes and procedures that administratively and financially stabilize the Society and allow it to grow, while at the same time remaining responsive to the needs of our members.

We have served six incoming presidents and Boards, performing the myriad of tasks necessary for the day-to-day running of the Society and the preparation of successful annual meetings. Our team has also worked closely with the different standing committees – Gender and Education, UREAG, New Scholars, and other committees – Awards, Nominations, Investments, Ad Hocs - to assist them in their operations.

Among our many projects, we have maintained an online forum for members to discuss featured articles from the Comparative Education Review and other membership-initiated topics (www.cies.us/forum). This forum has also served as an e-archive of minutes, reports, and contracts for our Board members. Moreover, in conjunction with our Historian, Erwin Epstein, and his team, we revamped the online space to feature CIES’ history.

Our newsletter, now called “CIES Perspectives” (http://cies.us/newsletter.htm), is another project that has undergone transformation throughout the years. We published an invited-response series and also member-submitted videos.  We have published numerous reflections on teaching and learning in CIE, and have centralized numerous useful announcements of publication opportunities, vacancies, and other events relevant to CIE.

We are confident that the new Secretariat team at the State University of New York (SUNY)- Albany - Dr. Jason Lane (Secretary), Dr. Alan Wagner (Treasurer), Treisy Romero and Tom Enderlein (Graduate Assistants) - will continue to improve the operations of the office and serve the Society in many other ways.

We want to thank the Society for allowing us to serve you. We have built long-term professional and personal relationships, and feel honored to be part of the growth of our field through CIES.

See you in Montreal!

Sincerely,

The FIU CIES Secretariat Team

Hilary Landorf, Treasurer
Benjamin “Ben” Baez, Secretary
Roger Geertz González, Newsletter Editor
Fernanda Pineda, Graduate Assistant
