“The
Gender and Education Committee has entered a new
era.” So remarked many CIES members following the
2005 Gender and Education Symposium at Stanford.
A record 175 individuals registered for the symposium,
which included presentations on promoting gender
equality and deconstructing gender equality, as
well as the Eggersten Lecture given by Professor
Nelly Stromquist.
The
next issue of the CIES Newsletter will revisit the
dynamism of the 2005 Gender Symposium presentations
and will describe the process through which CIES
members will be invited to design the Gender Symposium
for CIES 2006.
At
the end of the 2005 symposium we recognized the
creation of the Gender and Education Committee ten
years ago and the leaders who have brought it to
this “new era”: --In 1995 CIES President Vandra
Masemann appointed Nelly Stromquist to chair the
newly established ad hoc Gender and Education Committee.
--In 1998 the GEC became a standing committee under
the bylaws of the new CIES constitution. --Subsequent
GEC Chairs were Karen Biraimah, Heidi Ross, Margaret
Sutton, and Mary Ann Maslak. Our members are sure
to have splendid suggestions for how we can continue
to celebrate the 10th anniversary of
the Gender and Education Committee during 2005-06.

and Education Committee Chair Shirley Miske (smiske@miskewitt.com).
