GENDER SYMPOSIUM 2005 - “Promoting and Deconstructing Gender Equality in
Education in 2005: Issues and Challenges”

The Gender Committee invites all CIES 2005 conference participants to attend
the three-part Gender Symposium on Wednesday, March 23, 2005, 10:30 a.m. –
3:00 p.m. Please register in advance on the conference web site.

The goals of Education for All and the Millennium Development Goals set 2005
as the first target date for achieving gender parity in education. Building
on the unique convergence of higher education, non-governmental
organizations, and development agency expertise at CIES, the 2005 Gender
Symposium will explore and critique the ways in which international
agencies, governments, and civil society organizations promote gender parity
and gender equality in education discourse, policy, and practice.

In Part One (10:30 – 12:00) Dr. Cream Wright, Education Section Chief,
UNICEF, will discuss “Promoting Gender Equality through the UN Girls’
Education Initiative: Successes and Challenges”; and Dr. Christina Rawley,
USAID/WID EQUATE Project Director, will examine “Promoting Gender Equality
through USAID Programming.” Dr. Mary Ann Maslak, St. John’s University will
present “Deconstructing Gender Rhetoric in EFA and MDG Documents”; and Dr.
Beth Goldstein, University of Kentucky, will explore “Deconstructing Gender
Equality in Development Discourse.”

In Part Two (12:00 – 1:30) Dr. Nelly Stromquist, Professor, University of
Southern California, will chart new territory for girls’ education in the
distinguished Eggertsen Lecture. Part Three of the Gender Symposium (1:30 –
3:00) will be a roundtable discussion among Dr. Stromquist, the Eggertsen
Lecture discussants, and morning session panelists. Dr. Heidi Ross, Indiana
University, will chair the session; Dr. Suzanne Grant Lewis, Harvard
University, will serve as rapporteur. An informal social gathering for all
Gender Symposium participants will follow the roundtable discussion.

The $20 fee for the Gender Symposium will include the Eggertsen Lecture
brown bag lunch and refreshments during symposium sessions. For additional
information contact Gender Committee Chairperson Shirley Miske
