"Educational and Social Transitions and Transformations"

The global landscape is marked by complex economic, socio-cultural and
political shifts and transitions. The proliferation of discourses on
war, peace, development, and democracy has posed new challenges to
education. New and complex alignments for global and local action, as well
as social activism, have emerged in response to escalating disparity and
conflict.

At the level of the nation-state, many countries have undergone
transition, but has transition proven to be transformatory? What is the role
of education in contexts of violent conflict and deprivation? Is mass
education truly speaking to the masses? Does the content of mass
education promote positive social, political and economic transformation?

What do we as educators hope to prepare our students for? How do we
negotiate the multifaceted connections between the global and the local in
our pedagogy, curriculum, research and policies? What actions are
people-as teachers, parents, or students-- taking the world over to ensure
education advances greater equity rather than deepen injustice?
