Assistant/Associate
Professor Position, International Education Program
Department of Educational Policy, Research, and Administration,
School of Education, University of Massachusetts Amherst
The International Education Program in the Department of Educational Policy,
Research, and Administration of the School of Education at the University
of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking to fill an Assistant/Associate Professor,
tenure-track position beginning in September of 2005. This is a search
for a new faculty member with expertise in International Development Education,
with a dual emphasis on education in emergency settings and non-formal
education methodologies. These two areas of expertise are in rapidly growing
demand to address the educational challenges found in developing countries.
We seek a colleague with substantial field experience in international
education programs, demonstrated capability for working with international
agencies, and successful experience attracting and managing funded projects.
The successful applicant will also demonstrate the ability to conduct
research, manage projects, and develop courses in, for example, accelerated
learning methodologies for post-conflict settings and alternative approaches
to basic education; adaptation of adult learning theory and practice to
new cultural contexts; cross-sectoral approaches to literacy (for example,
combining literacy learning with HIV/AIDS education); and promoting community-based
educational initiatives in the United States and abroad. This position
will work closely with the Center for International Education helping
to implement funded projects and contracts.
In
addition to an earned doctorate, this position requires (1) experience
with and knowledge of education in emergency and low-resource settings
and/or non-formal educational methodologies; (2) teaching experience or
the potential to teach a diverse graduate-level student population; (3)
potential for establishing a research agenda and prior evidence of scholarship;
(4) a willingness to write research proposals and work on funded projects;
(5) a collaborative and participatory approach style; and (6) flexibility
and interest in working with faculty and students in a School of Education.
Although
part of a traditional university system, the International Education Program
and its affiliated Center for International Education are committed to
operating as a participatory community where all members take an active
role. Center members consist of faculty, staff, current students, and
graduates. Together they form a learning community that combines study
of theory with the practical management of educational programs. The International
Education Program reflects the belief that the best professional training
occurs when a person can move freely between periods of reflection, study,
and field experiences. Much of the learning, therefore, takes place through
the design and implementation of educational projects both in the United
States and abroad in which students take an active part. Since the vitality
and substance of this training depends heavily on the mutual commitment
and contribution of all participants, we seek to maintain a diversity
of members who bring with them considerable field experience as well as
commitment to international education.
The
University of Massachusetts Amherst is located in the scenic Connecticut
