Religion & Education is a journal of analysis and comment with the purpose of advancing public understanding and dialogue on issues at the intersections of religion and education. These issues emerge in various venues; manuscripts are invited from work in any such arena: public or private education at elementary, secondary, or higher education institutions; non-school or community organizations and settings; and formal or informal organizations or groups with religion or spirituality as an integral part of their work. Articles are invited from diverse methodological approaches and theoretical and ideological perspectives. Some articles are solicited, but unsolicited articles are encouraged. Unsolicited manuscripts are put through a peer review process. Opinions expressed by contributors do not necessarily reflect those of the editors or publisher. This journal does not address the work of formal religious institutions including churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples. Rather, it focuses on the beliefs and values arising from all traditions as they come into contact with educational work in the public square.
The International Journal of Education and Religion publishes studies on religiously affiliated schools, colleges and universities. It provides an international forum for scholars across different religions and continents. The journal presents empirical research and theory relevant to religious affiliated educational institutions. Each issue also contains a section of book reviews. The topics of the journal touch all levels of the educational institution: the micro-level (such as religious education, moral education, teacher ethics), the meso-level (such as identity of schools, school ethos, admission of pupils, normative school leadership, influence of parents in the school board) and the macro-level (such as state politics, law, legitimization of religiously affiliated schools, relation to the churches). Contributions in the journal span a wide range of academic disciplines, including education, pedagogy, philosophy, theology, ethics, law, sociology, and psychology. The journal is published in association with the ecumenical and international Education & Ethos Network, which brings together scholars of different academic disciplines who study religiously affiliated schools, and research-oriented practitioners.
The Journal of Church and State is concerned with what has been called the "greatest subject in the history of the West." It seeks to stimulate interest, dialogue, research, and publication in the broad area of religion and the state. JCS publishes constitutional, historical, philosophical, theological, and sociological studies on religion and the body politic in various countries and cultures of the world, including the United States. Each issue features, in addition to a timely editorial, five or more major articles, and thirty-five to forty reviews of significant books related to church and state. Periodically, important ecclesiastical documents and government texts of legislation and/or court decisions are also published. Regular features include "Notes on Church State Affairs", which reports current developments throughout the world, and a list of "Recent Doctoral Dissertations in Church and State."
The Journal of the American Academy of Religion is generally considered to be the top academic journal in the field of religious studies. This international quarterly journal publishes top scholarly articles that cover the full range of world religious traditions together with provocative studies of the methodologies by which these traditions are explored. Each issue also contains a large and valuable book review section.
Religion, State & Society has a long-established reputation as the leading English-language academic publication focusing on communist and formerly communist countries throughout the world, and the legacy of the encounter between religion and communism. To augment this brief Religion, State & Society has now expanded its coverage to include religious developments in countries which have not experienced communist rule, and to treat wider themes in a more systematic way. The journal encourages a comparative approach where appropriate, with the aim of revealing similarities and differences in the historical and current experience of countries, regions and religions, in stability or in transition. The journal will retain its interdisciplinary approach broadly based in the humanities, and continue to cover issues in communist and post-communist countries, including Central Asia and China.
The British Journal of Religious Education (BJRE) is an international peer-reviewed journal which has a pedigree stretching back to 1934 when it began life as Religion in Education. In 1961 the title was changed to Learning for Living, and the present title was adopted in 1978. It is the leading journal in Britain for the dissemination of international research in religion and education and for the scholarly discussion of issues concerning religion and education internationally.
BJRE aims to promote and report research and scholarship in religious education and related fields such as values education, spiritual education and intercultural education insofar as they relate to the discussion of religion or religious traditions and movements.
Teaching Theology and Religion is published in cooperation with the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion. The Wabash Center supports teachers of religion and theology in higher education through meetings and workshops, grants, consultants, a journal and other resources to make accessible the scholarship of teaching and learning.
The Journal of Religious History is an international, fully refereed journal which publishes articles and reviews current work in the history of religions and their relationship with all aspects of human experience. With high quality international contributors, the journal explores religion and its related subjects, along with debates on comparative method and theory in religious history.
The International Journal of Religion and Spirituality in Society aims to create an intellectual frame of reference for the academic study of religion and spirituality, and to create an interdisciplinary conversation on the role of religion and spirituality in society. It is intended as a place for critical engagement, examination, and experimentation of ideas that connect religious philosophies to their contexts throughout history in the world, places of worship, on the streets, and in communities. The journal addresses the need for critical discussion on religious issues – specifically as they are situated in the present-day contexts of ethics, warfare, politics, anthropology, sociology, education, leadership, artistic engagement, and the dissonance or resonance between religious tradition and modern trends.
Studies in Philosophy and Education is an international peer-reviewed journal that focuses on the philosophical, theoretical, normative and conceptual problems and issues in educational research, policy and practice. As such, Studies in Philosophy and Education is not the expression of any one philosophical or theoretical school or cultural tradition. Rather, the journal promotes exchange and collaboration among philosophers, philosophers of education, educational and social science researchers, and educational policy makers throughout the world. Contributions that address this wide audience, while clearly reflecting standards of academic excellence, are encouraged. In this regard, the journal also welcomes contributions of philosophical and theoretical interest from non-philosophers in the educational and social science community.
Social Compass is a fully peer reviewed international journal that publishes original research and review articles on the sociology of religion. It aims to reflect the wide variety of research being carried out by sociologists of religion in all countries. Part of each issue consists of invited articles on a particular theme; for the unthemed part of the journal, articles will be considered on any topic that bears upon religion in contemporary societies.
