About the Japan Special Interest Group
of the Comparative and International Education Society
The Japan SIG was established in 2007 to create opportunities for ongoing collaboration on future research projects, publications, and grant applications. The Japan SIG is intended to formalize and strengthen communication among scholars of Japan, and to help the larger CIES membership become better acquainted with Japanese education and society.
Membership in the SIG is open to anyone with an interest in education in Japan. Because some of the richest collaborations occur when issues are viewed from quite distinct points of view, scholars from across the disciplinary spectrum are encouraged to join.
At the 2008 CIES conference in New York, members of the Japan SIG identified five areas of professional and research interest in Japanese education:
a. International education exchange
b. Politics and policy
c. Higher education
d. Philosophy and aims of education
e. Non-formal education
While the Japan SIG welcomes all proposals for the 2009 CIES conference related to Japanese education, the topics above were identified to be of particular interest to Japan SIG members.
The Japan SIG will be scheduling a meeting and reception at the 2009 CIES Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, March 22-26, 2009. Time and place will be announced on this website.
