| About Us |

 The Global Literacy Special Interest Group is organized around critical practices in literacy research, instruction, assessment, and contemporary issues and implications of literacy use throughout the world.

Key literacy issues include:

  • developmentally-appropriate literacy curricula
  • promising practices in teaching reading and writing in pre-school, primary secondary, and tertiary settings
  • nonformal literacy instruction
  • the assessment of reading and writing
  • family literacy
  • advocacy campaigns for creating cultures of reading and writing
  • standards for conducting literacy research in culturally, politically, and economically diverse contexts.

The Global Literacy Special Interest Group serves the membership of CIES:

        *      as a means of collecting relevant information on global literacy activities;
        *      as a venue for distributing information on global literacy to CIES members and the                 public;
        *      as a link between CIES members and other agencies and institutions interested in                 global literacy
       *      as a stimulus for global partnerships for local literacy research in the economically               developing world.
