GREETINGS from the ASIG CHAIR (PDF)
Continued Reflection on Post-colonial Education for development in Africa
We hope this finds you well.
As you may have already seen, the theme of the 2012 Annual Conference of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) to be held in San Juan (Puerto Rico) on April 22-27 is the Worldwide Education Revolution. The 2011 Conference in Montreal was an opportunity for us to reflect on the broad theme of “Half a Century of education for development in Africa: Taking stock and looking forward” that the Africa Special Interest Group (ASIG) chose to address. We are still enthused by the great contributions made with five highlighted panels, ten regular panels and many other individual papers.
African countries did not acquire their independence with their subsequent post-colonial policies at the same time. The country which arguably undertook the most daring and revolutionary educational policies, namely Tanzania, has not celebrated its independence Jubilee yet. Thus, we would like to continue our reflection on the theme of the 2011 Conference while engaging various educational thoughts and policy changes across the continent. In line with the aforementioned theme of the 2012 CIES Conference the ASIG finds it useful to continue our assessment of the post-colonial national education projects by engaging in the efforts of stock taking and prospective exercise.
In case you have not done so yet, we would like to encourage you to submit a panel or individual paper proposal for the 2012 CIES conference. Under the broad theme of the Worldwide Education Revolution, our SIG hopes to organize several panels. Although for the 2012 Conference ASIG, like other SIGs, will have only two highlighted panels in keeping with the new allotment cap, we encourage current and potential ASIG members to propose panels and individual papers that will contribute to our effort to continue to ensure greater presence of scholars, practitioners and other specialists of African education.
Proposals must now be submitted on-line (see http://www.cies2012.psu.edu/index.html). The deadline is October 31, 2011. When you submit your proposal, please check the appropriate box to indicate you would like it to be considered by ASIG.
We thank you for your cooperation.
