NEW SCHOLARS WORKSHOP [ 2007 CIES New Scholars Workshop Participants ]
CIES 2008 New Scholars Workshop Wednesday, March 19, 2008 (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.)
Purpose of Workshop Every year CIES holds a New Scholars Workshop at the annual CIES conference. This workshop is a unique opportunity for Ph.D. students to discuss their dissertation research with other doctoral students and experienced scholars in the field. This will improve your work and it will strengthen links between international education programs. Time/Format of Workshop The doctoral candidate workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2008. The workshop will consist of formal presentation sessions, each followed by a feedback period, to allow participants adequate time for constructive discussion with students and resource faculty. A group luncheon for all workshop participants will be held between the morning and afternoon sessions. Candidates are required to participate the entire day. Travel Grant Twenty applicants will be selected, and will receive $200 for travel support to attend the 2008 CIES Annual Meeting in New York City, New York. If you are applying but have found other travel support, state this on your application so that we can allocate the resources to students who are not so fortunate. Upon acceptance to the workshop, participants will be given additional information about the travel grant. Qualifications for Applicants: · Student member of CIES, registered or planning to register for the 2008 CIES Annual Meeting in New York City, New York. · Doctoral candidate between the dissertation proposal stage and early writing stage as confirmed by your faculty advisor. · Student has not previously participated in a New Scholars Workshop. · Commitment to the all-day (8:30-4:30 p.m.) workshop on Wednesday, March 19, 2008. · Students are required to read and engage substantively with other participants work both prior to and at the workshop. · The travel grant is dependent on meeting all expectations.
Please include the following information: · Title of dissertation. · Name, mailing address, email address, and telephone number. · Institutional affiliation. · Name of your dissertation faculty chairperson. · Anticipated stage in program (i.e., dissertation proposal stage, beginning writing stage, etc.) at the time of the conference. · 500 word abstract. · Five descriptors for the dissertation proposal. · Three things you have learned that you think might be helpful for other participants at the New Scholars Workshop. · Three open-ended questions that you have regarding your dissertation proposal (to stimulate substantive discussion regarding dilemmas fundamental to the field). · If selected, you will later be asked to submit a draft doctoral dissertation proposal. The dissertation proposal will be circulated to all members of the workshop. You will be required to read all and to prepare comments on a subset of those proposals. The dissertation proposal must be no more than 2,500 words.
Proposal Submission/Deadline The deadline for the New Scholars Workshop application is November 25, 2007. Applicants will be notified by the New Scholars Committee of the decision by December 31, 2007. Please note, doctoral candidates who also wish to have a paper proposal considered for the main conference must submit separate application materials to the conference organizing committee.
