Director, AKU-Institute of Educational Development, East Africa (IED - EA)

 

The Aga Khan University (AKU) occupies a unique position in the academic world.

With an overall mandate to promote the welfare of the people of developing countries and teaching sites in ten countries, the University is a world-renowned, progressive organization that combines the values and missions of a non profit organization with the commitment to excellence in education, research and service of a world class university. Over the past five years, the AKU has been increasingly fulfilling its mandate as an international university through its programmes in nursing, medicine, and education development and research in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda).

 

The University's first Institute for Educational Development was established in Karachi, Pakistan and the second was launched in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with an East African mandate. The latter is responsible for developing institutional capacity, leadership and governance in teacher education and promoting research culture in East Africa through collaboration with local, regional and international institutions of higher education. In addition to offering a certificate and Masters program (with plans to introduce a PhD program when capacity permits), the Institute has also begun conducting rigorous research programmes addressing the cross-cutting issues in education confronting East Africa and the World.

 

The opportunity now exists for a new Director to provide visionary and strategic leadership for the continued growth and development of the IED, EA building on the success that the Institute has already achieved and driving a continued agenda of innovation. In particular, the new Director will enhance an environment conducive to excellence in research and will succeed as a strong and persuasive advocate for the Institute. The individual will continue to raise the profile of the Institute by acting as a catalyst to strengthen the Institute’s bonds with the community, partner/international universities and governments, local and abroad.

 

The new Director will have earned a doctorate and achieved a strong track record in scholarship. He/she will have demonstrated powerful and transparent leadership that can foster a shared vision.  The Director will have increased academic excellence through creative management that will achieve the scholarly, educational, financial and administrative goals of the institute. The successful candidate will be a dynamic participant in both the professional and academic communities, collegial, keen about the student experience, internationally connected and a bridge builder.

The successful candidate will be based in Dar es Salaam, formerly Mzizima, a beautiful, friendly, relaxing and safe city positioned on the coast of East

Africa. It is also the country’s richest city and the Dar es Salaam Region has a population of over 2.8 million. A city with exceptional weather and proximity to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Africa, Dar es Salaam boasts a large expat community, good restaurants and a very welcoming culture.
