CIES 2010 New Scholars Workshop
Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday, March 2, 3, &4, 2010 (8:00 a.m.-4:00p.m.)
Purpose of Workshop
Every year CIES holds a New Scholars Workshop at the annual CIES conference. This all-day workshop is a unique opportunity for Ph.D. and Ed.D. students to discuss their dissertation research with other doctoral students and experienced scholars in the field. This will improve your work and it will strengthen links between international education programs.
Time/Format of Workshop
The doctoral candidate workshop will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. on either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday March 2, 3, & 4, 2010. In order to allow the greatest number of new scholars to participate, students will be selected to participate in ONE full day. The maximum number of students asked to participate each day will be 15, with a total acceptance of 45 doctoral students. The workshop will consist of formal presentation sessions, each followed by a feedback period, to allow participants adequate time for constructive discussion with students and resource faculty. Candidates are required to participate the entire day.
Travel Grant
Out of those invited to participate in the New Scholars Workshop, 20 participants will be selected to receive $200 for travel support to attend the 2010 CIES Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. If you are applying but have found other travel support, please state this on your application so that we can allocate the resources to students who are not so fortunate. Upon acceptance to the workshop, participants will be given additional information about the travel grant.
For the remainder of applicants selected without travel grant, you will still have the same opportunities to interact with other doctoral students and leading CIES faculty. However, due to limitations in the budget there will be no travel grant available.
Qualifications for Applicants:
• Student member of CIES, registered or planning to register for the 2010 CIES Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois.
• Doctoral candidate between the dissertation proposal stage and early writing
stage as confirmed by your faculty advisor.
• Student has not previously participated in a New Scholars Workshop.
• Commitment to the all-day (8:00-4:00 p.m.) workshop.
• Students are required to read and engage substantively with other participants
work both prior to and at the workshop.
• Participation is dependent on meeting all expectations.
Please include the following information:
• Title of dissertation.
• Name, mailing address, email address, and telephone number.
• Institutional affiliation.
• Three keyword descriptors of the dissertation research.
• 100-120 Abstract
• 1000 word proposal. Proposals should also include the following:
o Name of your dissertation faculty chairperson.
o Anticipated stage in program (i.e., dissertation proposal stage, beginning writing stage, etc.) at the time of the conference.
o Objectives or purposes, and main questions that the dissertation
o Thesis statement stating what the dissertation expects readers/audience to know, believe, or understand.
o Perspective(s) or theoretical/conceptual framework including connections to the literature or to previous experiences related to the dissertation.
o Modes of inquiry, methods, and techniques used to attain the objectives or purposes, and main questions posed in the dissertation.
o And if applicable-- data sources or evidence to support conclusions and how they extend understandings of the particular issues addressed by the dissertation.
• If selected, you will later be asked to submit a draft doctoral dissertation proposal and three open-ended questions that you have regarding your dissertation proposal. The dissertation proposal will be circulated to all members of your groups within the New Scholars Workshop. The dissertation proposal must be no more than 2,500 words.
• Please keep in mind that prior to the New Scholars Workshop in Chicago; you will be required to read all of your groups’ proposals and prepare comments on each proposal.

The on-line submission system will open in early September 2009 and may be accessed through the CIES conference web site at http://cies2010.msu.edu/.
