The Department of Educational Policy, Research and Administration in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking candidates to join a dedicated and accomplished community of faculty, students, and staff as Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor in International Education – International Development Education. This is a full-time, benefited, visiting position for two years beginning in September 2006.
The School is NCATE-approved and offers a comprehensive program leading to Master’s and doctoral degrees. We share a fundamental commitment to social justice and the pursuit of educational excellence. Located in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the flagship campus of the Commonwealth’s university system and is one of today’s leading centers of public higher education in the Northeast.
The person in this position will work closely with members of the Center for International Education. The Center is committed to operating as a participatory community where all members take an active role. In this context, faculty, staff, current students, and graduates form a learning community that combines study of theory with the practical management of educational programs. The International Education curriculum reflects the belief that the best professional training occurs when a person can move freely among periods of reflection, study, and field experiences. Much of the learning, therefore, takes place through the design and implementation of education projects both in the United States and abroad in which students take an active part. Since the vitality and substance of this training depends heavily on the mutual commitment and contributions of all participants, we seek to maintain a diversity of members who bring with them considerable field experience as well as commitment to international education.
Responsibilities: develop and teach graduate-level courses in international education with emphasis on adult and non-formal education, literacy and accelerated learning, and community development; advise graduate students; participate in the design and oversight of externally-funded projects; conduct research; collaborate with members of the Center for International Education; and contribute to the School’s undergraduate curriculum.
Qualifications: earned doctorate in Education or a related discipline; substantial field experience in international education programs with a specific focus on adult non-formal learning, literacy and accelerated learning, and community development; demonstrated ability to work with international agencies; established grant and publication record or indication of considerable promise; and experience or potential to teach at the graduate level. Relevant background for this position includes accelerated learning methodologies for adults and alternative approaches to basic education; adaptation of adult learning theory and practice to new cultural contexts; cross-sectoral approaches to literacy; and promoting community-based educational initiatives internationally and in the United States.
Interested applicants should send a curriculum vitae, letter of application, three letters of reference, transcripts of highest degree, and samples of written work to: Search Committee Chair, International Education – R27015, c/o Ms. Zinnia Wu, School of Education, 124 Furcolo Hall, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA 01003-9308.
