CIES Annual Conference 2012
Globalization and Education SIG
Call for Paper Proposals
The 56th Annual Meeting of the Comparative and International Education Society will be held from Sunday, April 22, to Friday, April 27 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Globalization and Education SIG will be hosting a number of panel sessions, as well as the Globalization and Education SIG Invited Lecture. The SIG also offers a prize for the best paper by an early career researcher (a student or a scholar who has received his or her doctorate within the past 5 years).
The SIG invites papers that engage with questions related to globalization and education broadly considered. We are particularly interested in papers that engage with the methodological issues that emerge in researching globalization, as well as submissions related to theoretical developments in globalization research. Additional topics of interest include globalization and higher education; how to theorize diffusion and translation; globalization and its impact on the method of comparison as well as on the politics of comparison; issues connected with scale and spatial reach; global educational governance; education and global social justice; and, global aid trends and education. The SIG also welcomes papers and presentations that deal with teaching about globalization and education.
Submission Guidelines for Individual Papers
To submit an individual or co-authored paper, proposals should be 500-750 words in length. To be considered for review, the following six elements must be addressed in the paper even if the results, conclusions, or findings are not complete or final at the time of the submission:
(a) objectives or purposes
(b) perspective or theoretical framework
(c) methods, techniques, or modes of inquiry
(d) data sources, evidenceframework
(e) results and/or conclusions
(f) significance of the study to the field of comparative and international education
The SIG does not accept pre-arranged Group Panels.
The early bird deadline for all submissions is October 1, 2011 at 11:59 pm (Pacific Time). The final deadline for submissions is October 31, 2011.
Inquiries about specific committee or SIGs should be directed to the respective chairs. General inquiries regarding CIES 2012 should be directed to cies2012@psu.edu.
Practical Information (from the general CIES Call for Papers):
General Procedures and Policies
Meeting the submission deadline. The submission system opens on July 18, 2011, and closes on October 31st, 2011 at 11:59 pm Pacific Time. No late submissions will be accepted.
Participant attendance requirement. All presenting authors of accepted papers and participants in all accepted sessions are expected to attend the Annual Meeting and be present at the scheduled sessions. If an emergency or other circumstance prevents a presenting author from attending the Annual Meeting, he or she must immediately notify the CIES 2012 office and program chair.
Participation limits. To promote broad participation in the meeting, individuals will be limited to one individual paper presentation. However, an individual may also serve as chair or discussant in addition to his or her presentation. In cases where an individual is participating in a group panel, that person may also present an individual paper provided that the content is substantially different.
Submitting Papers or Sessions
All submissions must be submitted electronically through the CIES Online Submission System. CIES members may access the Online Submission System using their member ID. Members who have submitted a paper to CIES in previous years will have their login info emailed to them. First-time submitters will be required to create a new account.
Proposals may be submitted for the general conference program or for a session organized by a CIES Special Committee or Special Interest Group. Information about the Gender & Education, New Scholars, and UREAG (Under-represented Racial, Ethnic, and Ability Groups) Committees—as well as all 18 SIGs—is available on the CIES website at http://www.cies.us/groups.htm. TEACHING ABOUT GLOBALIZATION COURSE SYLLABUS PROJECT |
|
[ under construction] |
At the 2007 CIES annual meeting in Baltimore the Globalization and Education SIG held a panel titled "Teaching about Globalization", convened by Sandra Staklis (Stanford University) and Noah W. Sobe (Loyola University Chicago).
Alongside interest in globalization as a concern of research and scholarship, there seems to be increasing interest in teaching about globalization in schools of education, both at the graduate and undergraduate level. In the panel in Baltimore we strove to feature a range of pedagogic and curricular approaches being used to present and organize globalization – not only in courses specifically on comparative and international education, but also in general foundations courses as well as in teacher prep courses.
Syllabi discussed at that panel are available for download here and we invite others to send the SIG chairperson syllabi and/or reflective writings on teaching about globalization to also be posted on this website.
